The HMRC Tax Refund Scam Explained
Fraudsters impersonating HMRC officials call claiming you're due a tax refund. They'll ask for personal and bank details to process the refund, but in reality they're stealing your information.
Warning: HMRC will NEVER call you about tax refunds out of the blue. All genuine refunds are processed automatically.
How the Scam Works
- You receive an unexpected call from someone claiming to be from HMRC
- They say you're owed a tax refund (often citing an exact amount)
- They ask for personal details including National Insurance number
- They request bank details to "process the refund"
- Alternatively, they may send you to a fake HMRC website
Real HMRC Contact Methods
Genuine HMRC contacts will:
- Never ask for bank details over the phone
- Never threaten you with arrest
- Never demand immediate payment
